Ditching The Skinnies For Mom Jeans

There is no doubt that I have spent the majority of my teenage years in skinny jeans. From snatching up Primark’s jeans of £6 when I was thirteen, being lazy and joining the jeggings craze at fourteen or discovering the beauty of Topshop jeans (which I will spend the rest of my life wearing I’m sure), I wear jeans a hell of a lot.

Jeans can prove to be *a little bit* expensive sometimes- being around £40 or more from Topshop definitely DOES NOT do my bank account any favors, hence why over the years I have stuck to the basics regarding jeans (and thankfully stayed the same size so there’s no need to repurchase!). I own the ‘must-haves’ of Topshop Jamie Jeans in both blue and black and even ventured out into some blue ripped jeans (cause obviously I’m super edgy, right?).

However, I still felt like there was something missing from my lil’ collection of jeans…and I probably just wanted to spend a bit more money on clothes, if I’m being totally honest LOL.

The Mom Jean craze has been around for quite some time now, so I’m pretty late to the party. To be completely honest, I had no clue what ‘mom jeans’ were, and how they were different to ‘boyfriend jeans’ and god knows what other jeans that are out there! After googling the world of mom jeans, I’ve found they; hold the 90’s vibes, are slightly baggy, high waisted with long back pockets. It’s funny as they used to hold the stigma of being unflattering and unfashionable, but now pretty much everyone is wearing them!

I really liked the look of Mom Jeans, but I was a bit apprehensive that they wouldn’t look good on me as I’m super tall (I mean, super tall at 5’7?) so I find it difficult to find jeans that fit my looooong legs and waist. Also as the Mom Jeans have a more loose fit, there was the obvious concern of losing my almost non-existent bum and looking like a boy!

SO, I popped onto my fave app ever- Depop and managed to get my hands on THESE Mom Jeans for an absolute bargain of £15. Normally, Topshop jeans are at the £50 mark, so this was a STEAL. If you are thinking of getting some jeans, or anything clothing that you aren’t completely sure about, I really recommend getting them second hand as if they aren’t your thang, it’s no biggie!

I was over the moon as soon as I tried them on as I think I can sort of rock them a bit? Because of this, I thought I’d compile a little list as to why Mom Jeans are the best:

  1. THERE’S SO MUCH ROOM! When it’s hot, you aren’t sweating buckets in them, and when you’ve stuffed your face when eating out you don’t feel uncomfortable!
  2. THEY ARE SO COMFY! I honestly think I could sleep in these. When wearing them out, they don’t feel like actual jeans, they feel more like sweatpants as the material is so much looser and softer!
  3. TOPS CAN BE TUCKED IN PERFECTLY! I think we all know the struggle of trying to tuck in a top into skinny jeans and failing miserably at trying not to have all those bumps and bulges of material sticking out around your hips and bum! As the style of Mom Jeans are looser at the top, you can tuck in tops (even if they are really long and oversized) without a problem!
  4. THEY JUST LOOK COOL. I am in no way a cool person at all, in fact, I am such a awkward person who honestly barely has a clue what they are doing LOL. But when I’m wearing these jeans, I just feel good and like I have my life somewhat together. They make me feel confident and that’s everything you need from a good pair of jeans.

Now, this post is in no way bashing skinny jeans lovers out there. I will not stop wearing my skinny jeans anytime soon, they are such a staple in my wardrobe and honestly work better with some tops that the Mom Jeans do. However, I really wanted to share why I love the Mom Jean trend so much as I think it could encourage some of you to give it a go as I really wasn’t planning to, but holy crap am I glad I did!

What’s your favourite jeans? What do you think of the Mom Jean craze?

I loooove this outfit Tash! You look so gorgeous, and I’m loving the mom jeans on you! I’m 5”8 and my legs are longer than anything so I’m sure they’d end up looking more like cropped baggy pants on me (which wouldn’t be a good look😂) although I’ve never tried any on, so I might do this winter & see how I feel. They look great on you!❤️

Thanks so much Soph! I honestly feel you with that, but I totally recommend TopShop jeans as their jeans come in different sizes for waist and legs so as your legs are longer, you can just buy a size with longer leg length, without changing your waist size like most jeans- they’ve honestly saved me haha! I’m sure they’d look amaze on you, thanks for reading!❤️

Mum jeans look amazing on you! During secondary, I stuggled with the right pair of jeans cause I was constantly growing and would have to repurchase after a few months😂 I didn’t join the mum jeans bandwagon but I think I should give it a try! xx
